Complete Image Size Guide for Every Social Media Platform (2026)
Getting image dimensions right for social media is tedious but important. Upload an image at the wrong size and the platform will crop it unpredictably, compress it aggressively, or display it with black bars. Every platform has its own specifications, and they change often enough that last year's guide may already be outdated.
This guide covers the current image size requirements for the seven major social media platforms as of 2026. Bookmark it and check back — we update it when platforms change their specs.
Instagram has the most complex image requirements because it supports multiple content formats, each with different optimal dimensions.
Feed posts
- Square: 1080 x 1080 px (1:1 aspect ratio)
- Portrait: 1080 x 1350 px (4:5 aspect ratio) — takes up the most screen space in the feed
- Landscape: 1080 x 566 px (1.91:1 aspect ratio)
- File size limit: 30 MB
- Formats accepted: JPG, PNG
The 4:5 portrait format occupies the most vertical screen real estate in the feed, making it the preferred format for maximum visibility. Instagram will downscale images wider than 1080 px, so there is no benefit to uploading at higher resolutions.
Stories and Reels covers
- Dimensions: 1080 x 1920 px (9:16 aspect ratio)
- Safe zone: Keep important content within the center 1080 x 1420 px to avoid overlap with UI elements (username, icons, reply bar)
Profile picture
- Upload size: 320 x 320 px minimum
- Display size: 110 x 110 px on mobile, 180 x 180 px on desktop
- Shape: Circular crop — keep important elements away from the edges
Feed post images
- Recommended: 1200 x 630 px (1.91:1 aspect ratio)
- Square posts: 1080 x 1080 px
- File size limit: 30 MB
- Formats: JPG, PNG, GIF, WebP
Facebook supports a wide range of aspect ratios but optimizes its feed layout for 1.91:1 landscape images. Square images also display well. Extreme aspect ratios (very tall or very wide) will be cropped or displayed with significant padding.
Cover photo
- Dimensions: 1640 x 924 px (desktop display)
- Mobile crop: The mobile display crops more aggressively on the sides, so keep essential content within the center 1200 x 924 px area
Event cover image
- Dimensions: 1200 x 628 px
Profile picture
- Upload size: 170 x 170 px minimum
- Shape: Circular crop on all surfaces
Feed post images
- Single image: 1200 x 627 px (1.91:1) or 1080 x 1080 px (1:1)
- Portrait: 1080 x 1350 px (4:5)
- File size limit: 10 MB
- Formats: JPG, PNG, GIF
LinkedIn's feed displays square and portrait images well on mobile, where most engagement happens. The 1.91:1 landscape format works best for link preview images and article shares.
Company page banner
- Dimensions: 1128 x 191 px
- Note: This is an unusually wide aspect ratio. Design accordingly — simple text and logos work best.
Profile background image
- Dimensions: 1584 x 396 px
Profile photo
- Upload size: 400 x 400 px minimum
- Shape: Circular crop
Article cover image
- Dimensions: 1200 x 644 px
Twitter / X
In-feed images
- Single image: 1200 x 675 px (16:9) or 1080 x 1080 px (1:1)
- Two images: Each 700 x 800 px
- Three images: One at 700 x 800 px, two at 700 x 400 px
- Four images: Each 700 x 400 px
- File size limit: 5 MB per image (JPG, PNG), 15 MB (GIF)
- Formats: JPG, PNG, GIF, WebP
X crops single images to approximately 16:9 from the center.
Header photo
- Dimensions: 1500 x 500 px
Profile photo
- Upload size: 400 x 400 px minimum
YouTube
Video thumbnails
- Dimensions: 1280 x 720 px (16:9 aspect ratio)
- File size limit: 2 MB
- Formats: JPG, PNG, GIF (static), BMP
- Minimum width: 640 px
Thumbnails directly affect click-through rates. Keep text large and readable, since thumbnails appear as small as 168 x 94 px in some placements.
Channel banner
- Upload size: 2560 x 1440 px
- Safe area: Center 1546 x 423 px for all-device visibility
Channel profile picture
- Upload size: 800 x 800 px minimum
TikTok
Profile photo
- Dimensions: 200 x 200 px minimum
- Shape: Circular crop
Video cover image
- Dimensions: 1080 x 1920 px (9:16)
- Safe zone: Keep important content out of the bottom 300 px to avoid overlap with the caption and UI
Photo posts
- Dimensions: 1080 x 1920 px (9:16 preferred)
- Formats: JPG, PNG
- Photo carousel: Up to 35 images per post
Standard pins
- Recommended: 1000 x 1500 px (2:3 aspect ratio)
- File size limit: 20 MB
- Formats: JPG, PNG
The 2:3 aspect ratio is critical on Pinterest. Taller pins get truncated; wider pins appear smaller.
Idea pins
- Dimensions: 1080 x 1920 px (9:16)
Profile image
- Upload size: 165 x 165 px minimum
- Shape: Circular crop
General tips for all platforms
Resize before uploading
Uploading an image larger than the platform's recommended dimensions means the platform will resize it for you — typically using a fast, low-quality algorithm. Resizing to the exact target dimensions yourself with a proper downsampling algorithm produces noticeably sharper results.
PixPipe's image resizer lets you set exact pixel dimensions and choose the resampling method. For downscaling, Lanczos resampling produces the sharpest results.
Use the right format
Upload JPG or PNG at high quality (90-95 for JPG). Platforms re-compress every image, so starting from the highest quality source minimizes double-compression artifacts. See our image compression guide for more detail.
Strip metadata before uploading
Unless you specifically want your EXIF data to be visible, remove it before uploading. While most major platforms strip GPS data, not all do, and relying on platform behavior for your privacy is risky. See our EXIF privacy guide for more.
Test on mobile
Most social media consumption happens on mobile. Always preview images on a phone screen before publishing — text readable on desktop may be illegible on mobile.
