The latest 2026 Etsy requirement

Your listing photos need to be at least 2000 pixels on the shortest side. That’s the threshold for Etsy’s zoom feature — photos below this get no zoom, and buyers who can’t zoom don’t convert as well.

Your first photo becomes the search thumbnail, and Etsy crops it to a square regardless of what you upload.

Two aspect ratios work well:

1:1 square (2000×2000) is the safest choice. The thumbnail shows exactly what you uploaded — no surprises.

4:3 landscape (2700×2025) also works, but the top and bottom get cut off in search results. If you go landscape, keep your product centered with breathing room on all sides.

Avoid common Etsy listing issues in 1 click

Our tool handles all of these automatically — here’s what it’s saving you from:

Etsy re-compresses your images. If you upload an already heavily-compressed JPEG, Etsy compresses it again — and double compression looks noticeably worse. The fix: upload at JPEG 85% quality, under 1MB. That gives Etsy less to work with and your listing stays sharp.

Etsy does not strip your metadata. Your phone embeds GPS coordinates, camera model, and exact timestamps into every photo. Etsy keeps all of it. Anyone who downloads your listing photo — a buyer, a competitor — can see where the photo was taken. For most sellers, that’s their home address.

Our tool strips all EXIF metadata automatically before you download.

Common issues that hurt your listings

Phone photos that are too small. Older phones shoot at 1600×1200 or similar — below Etsy’s 2000px threshold. Result: no zoom feature, soft-looking thumbnails. If your photos are under 2000px, use our AI upscaler to enlarge them without blur before uploading.

Oversized files. A single 4K phone photo can be 8–12MB. Uploads are slow, timeouts are common on mobile connections. Compress to under 1MB — there’s no visible quality loss at 85% JPEG.

Wrong color space. If your editing software exports in AdobeRGB or CMYK, colors will shift when viewed on Etsy. Always export as sRGB. Our tool converts to sRGB automatically.

Etsy’s rules on AI-generated images (2026)

Etsy now requires sellers to disclose any AI-generated imagery in their listings. If you use Midjourney, DALL-E, or similar tools for product mockups, lifestyle backgrounds, or listing graphics, you must tag them appropriately.

Listings with undisclosed AI images risk removal. The policy applies to all image types — not just the product photo itself, but also any AI-generated backgrounds, props, or enhancements.

If you’re sourcing product photos from suppliers, you may not know whether they used AI. Use our AI image detector to check before listing.

Protecting your privacy as a seller

Every photo from your phone contains hidden metadata: GPS location, device model, exact date and time. Most sellers don’t realize this data travels with the image when they upload to Etsy.

Etsy does not remove it. A buyer can download your listing photo and extract your home address in seconds.

This tool strips all EXIF data automatically — it’s on by default in the pipeline. For a deeper look at which selling platforms strip metadata and which don’t, see our seller photo privacy guide.

FAQ

What is the best image size for Etsy listings?+
2000×2000 pixels (square) is the recommended size. This ensures zoom works and thumbnails display clearly. JPEG format at 85% quality, under 1MB file size.
Does Etsy strip EXIF data from photos?+
No. Etsy does not remove metadata from uploaded images. Your GPS coordinates, camera info, and timestamps remain visible to anyone who downloads the image. Strip EXIF before uploading.
What aspect ratio should I use for Etsy?+
Square (1:1) is safest — Etsy crops thumbnails to square in search results, so what you upload is what buyers see. Landscape 4:3 also works but gets cropped in thumbnails.
Can I use AI-generated images on Etsy?+
Yes, but you must disclose them. Etsy's 2026 policy requires appropriate tagging of AI-generated imagery. Undisclosed AI images risk listing removal.
How many photos can I add to an Etsy listing?+
Up to 10 photos per listing. Use all 10 — show front, back, detail shots, scale reference, and packaging.
What happens if my photos are smaller than 2000px?+
The zoom feature won't work on your listing, and thumbnails may appear soft. Use an AI upscaler to enlarge photos to 2000px+ before uploading.
