Understanding YouTube's banner safe area

YouTube's channel banner is one of the trickiest images to get right because it displays at completely different sizes on different devices.

You upload at 2560x1440 pixels, but only the center 1546x423 pixels are guaranteed to be visible everywhere. This center zone is called the "safe area."

On desktop: The banner displays as a wide strip across the top, roughly 2560x423 pixels. Content outside this strip is cropped.

On mobile: Even narrower — only the center 1546x423 pixels show. Text or logos near the edges will be cut off.

On TV: The full 2560x1440 image is visible. This is the only device that shows everything you upload.

The takeaway: put your logo, text, and key visuals inside the center 1546x423 safe zone. Use the outer area for decorative backgrounds only.

Channel banner design best practices

Design at 2560x1440, but think in the safe zone. Start your canvas at full size, then mark the 1546x423 center area. All critical content goes here.

Keep text minimal. Your channel name is already displayed below the banner. Use banner text for a tagline, upload schedule, or call to action — not to repeat your name.

Use a simple background. Gradients, subtle patterns, or a single photo work best. Busy backgrounds compete with your profile picture and channel info that overlay the banner.

Test on multiple devices. After uploading, check your channel on a phone, desktop, and if possible a TV. YouTube's preview tool in the upload dialog is helpful but doesn't show every edge case.

Common channel banner mistakes

Putting text near the edges. The #1 mistake. Text or logos placed outside the safe zone get cropped on mobile. Always center important elements.

Uploading too small. YouTube requires a minimum of 2048x1152, but images under 2560x1440 will appear slightly soft on high-DPI screens and TVs.

Forgetting about profile picture overlap. On desktop and mobile, your profile picture and channel name overlay the bottom-left of the banner. Don't place important content there.

Not compressing. YouTube's 6MB limit is generous, but large PNG files can exceed it. Compress to JPEG if your banner is photo-based.
