What Facebook Marketplace requires in 2026
Facebook Marketplace accepts photos as small as 500×500 pixels, but 1200×1200 pixels is recommended for clear display across mobile and desktop.
Square (1:1) and 4:3 images display most consistently in the Marketplace feed, search results, and category views. Other ratios work but may be cropped unpredictably.
Facebook only accepts JPEG and PNG — no WEBP, HEIC, or other formats. If you shoot in HEIC on iPhone, you'll need to convert before uploading.
The privacy problem with Facebook Marketplace
This is the most important section on this page.
Facebook Marketplace is uniquely risky for privacy. Unlike dedicated resale apps, Marketplace listings are tied to your Facebook profile — your name, location, and sometimes your friends list are visible to buyers.
On top of that, Facebook does not always strip EXIF metadata from listing photos. Your GPS coordinates can remain embedded, giving buyers your exact home address.
For local pickup items, this is especially dangerous — buyers already know your general area, and the photo metadata can confirm the exact address.
Always strip EXIF data before uploading. This tool does it automatically in your browser.
Marketplace photo tips
Lead with the best photo. Your first image shows in search results and the feed. Make it clear, well-lit, and showing the full item.
Show condition honestly. Marketplace buyers expect to see the actual item. Include close-ups of any wear, damage, or flaws. This reduces no-shows and disputes.
Include multiple angles. Use all 10 photo slots. Front, back, sides, details, measurements, and any accessories included.
Natural light wins. Photograph near a window. Flash creates harsh shadows that make items look worse than they are.
What gets your listing removed
Facebook has strict rules on Marketplace photos:
No stock photos. Must be actual photos of the item you're selling.
No text overlays or promotional banners. Facebook will reject listings with price tags, "SALE" text, or watermarks in the photos.
No misleading images. The item in the photo must match what you're selling. Using a different model or color variant leads to removals.
