Instagram Story Size Guide (2026)

Instagram Stories display at 1080×1920 pixels in a 9:16 aspect ratio — the full screen of a modern smartphone. This applies to both images and videos.

If you upload an image that isn't 9:16, Instagram will either crop it or add a blurred background to fill the frame. Neither looks professional. Always design at exactly 1080×1920 to control how your Story appears.

Resolution matters: Images smaller than 1080px wide get upscaled by Instagram, which makes them look soft and pixelated. Images larger than 1080px wide get downscaled, which is fine — but there's no benefit to uploading at 4K. Stick to 1080×1920 for the cleanest result.

Instagram overlays UI elements on top of your Story. If your text or key visuals sit under these overlays, they'll be blocked or hard to read.

Top safe zone: The top 250px is reserved for your profile picture, username, and the Story progress bar. Don't place important text here.

Bottom safe zone: The bottom 270px contains the message input bar, swipe-up link (or link sticker area), and reaction buttons. Keep calls-to-action above this area so they don't compete with Instagram's UI.

The true safe area: Your content should live in the middle 1080×1400 zone (roughly 250px from top, 270px from bottom). This ensures everything is visible and tappable regardless of device.

Using landscape photos. Horizontal (16:9) images only fill about 40% of the Story frame. The rest becomes a blurred or colored background. If you must use a landscape photo, place it in a 9:16 template with supporting text above and below.

Text too close to edges. Different phone models have different screen shapes (notches, rounded corners, punch-hole cameras). Text within 50px of any edge risks getting clipped on some devices.

Excessive file size. While Instagram accepts up to 30MB for Story images, large files take longer to upload and may get compressed more aggressively. Keep images under 1MB at JPEG 85% quality for the sharpest result after Instagram processes them.

Forgetting about link sticker placement. If your Story includes a link sticker, make sure it doesn't overlap with your key message. Place the sticker in the lower-center area, and keep your headline in the upper half.

Use high contrast text. Stories are viewed in all lighting conditions — bright sunlight, dark rooms. Use bold text with a semi-transparent background overlay to ensure readability everywhere.

Vertical flow. Design your Story to read from top to bottom. Put the hook or headline in the upper third, supporting visuals in the middle, and your call-to-action in the lower third (above the safe zone).

Consistency builds brand. Use the same fonts, colors, and layout templates across Stories. This makes your content instantly recognizable when viewers are tapping through multiple accounts.
